The Baptism of Christ, A Tudor Oak Panel

Taken from the centre section of the Gerard David (c.1460-1523) triptych showing Jesus standing in a river, receiving the baptism from John, who is knelt on the bank, being watched by a winged figure, with a dove hovering above. In the background is a village and the whole scene is set beneath a flattened arch supported on ā€˜Sā€™ scrolls and human masks.

Gerard David painted the triptych in Bruges, which is now hanging in the Groeninge Museum. This carving is probably Flemish, and dates circa 1550.

Width 23 inches, height 19 inches.
