Christmas Tree Windsor Chair
Originally referred to on the trade card of Mr Allsop of Worksop as "Best High Chair", this is one of the finest Windsor chairs I have seen from the Worksop chairmaking tradition. Now known as a "Christmas Tree Windsor", (which refers to the fir tree motif fretted into the upper and lower splats). This chair is made of yew wood which has mellowed to a fabulous colour, with a well-grained elm seat. It stands very correctly, with a beautifully raked back. I would attribute this chair to the Allsop family, as I have never seen a Christmas Tree splat chair with any other name on it. Worksop, circa 1840.
Height 44 inches.
