Early 19th Century Ash Windsor Chair Stamped Taylor of Grantham
A very elegant low back Windsor armchair, made in beautifully grained ash, with an elm saddle seat. The lack of a central splat gave rise to the name "Stick Back", and was most commonly found in the Lincolnshire chair making tradition. It is also usual for this type of chair to have single-ring turned front legs, whilst the back legs remain plain. This chair is clearly stamped "Taylor of Grantham" (fl 1800-1843) at the rear of the seat. Lovely original nut brown colour and deep patination.
Grantham, circa 1820.
