Elegant High Back Yew Wood Windsor Armchair

An early 19th Century yew wood Windsor armchair, of very pleasing proportions and unusual construction. The spindles around the back mortice all the way through the seat and are then cut off level on the underside. This method of construction is found in late 18th Century and early 19th Century chairs. The single-ring leg turning, together with the three-ring arm turning, would suggest the place of manufacture to be Rockley, and the early construction technique would suggest it was made by Rockley's first chair maker, William Wheatland.
