An Extremely Rare Elizabethan Oak Armchair

Having an arcaded back panel, with carved central cipher, below a guilloche decorated arch supported on ā€˜S’ scroll columns, with stylised daises at the top (as an interesting point, the daisy decoration is repeated throughout the back panel).

Above the arcaded panel is a remarkable top rail, with integral pierced and scrolled crest, centred by a lion mask. To each side of the crest are turned beehive finials.

The boarded seat is secured to moulded rails by small oak pegs. The down-curving arms have an incised line and stamp decoration.

It is the arm supports and front legs that are most astonishing, heavily turned and then fluted, this is an extremely rare feature, which dates the piece to the last few years of the 16th century. The legs, joined by stretchers, terminate with their original, although worn, toes.

Wonderful, rich, colour and patina.

English, Wiltshire/Gloucestershire, circa 1590.

Height 48 inches, depth 24 inches, width 24.5 inches.

Ref 2964
