A Fascinating Renaissance Carved Panel – Samson Slaying the Lion
Carved in great detail, the lion has a full and flowing mane, well-proportioned paws and a long curving tail. Samson sits across the lion’s back, holding the jaw bone of an ass in his left hand.
Above the figures are a pair of stylised birds, back to back with richly carved feather detail.
Probably English, circa 1550-1600.
