A Fine and Impressive Pair of Early 18th Century Giltwood Candlesticks
A faux candle sits on a circular top, supported on a carved gadrooned urn. The gently tapering baluster columns have finely carved decoration which includes many types of stylised leaves, whilst the base of the columns are slightly more “architectural”, with multiple reeded columns. The lamps stand on shaped lion paw feet.
Retaining the original painted and gessoed finish, which has mellowed to a lovely patinated bronze colour.
Italian, circa 1730-60.
Height to the circular plate at the top – 42 inches. Height to the top of the faux candle – 52 inches.
Note: The candlesticks were converted to electricity in the Edwardian period – beginning of the 20th century, and they retain the most marvellous clusters of lamp fittings, typical of the period.
