A Fine Late 16th Century French Tapestry
Illustrating figures gathered around a colonnaded dias, possibly showing an episode from the story of Judith. Woven from silks and wools, the tapestry has kept its original border, into which is woven the cross of Lorraine, which would indicate the piece was woven in Nancy, France, circa 1600.
The De Young Museum, San Francisco, has a very similar “Judith” tapestry, accession number 49748.
Width 8 feet, height 8 feet 8 inches.
