A Fine Mid-17th Century Oak Wall Cupboard

A very rare and original oak cupboard, with a simple moulding around the top, below which is a single door with vertical run-mouldings to the frame. The single panel is decorated with a lozenge centred with a stylised daisy-like flower head. The door is opened on the original iron butterfly hinges, to reveal the original single shelf and lovely old wallpaper over the oak backboards. The bottom moulding echoes the moulding around the top and the whole piece has a wonderful rich colour and patina.

This simple lozenge, with very restrained pendants, is typical of Salisbury, circa 1630-1660.

Interestingly, I first bought this cupboard in the early 1980’s in a village hall sale on a Saturday afternoon in Reading. I have followed its progress through the ownership of three good collectors, including Alistair Samson and Alan Elliott, before recently buying it back again.

Width 17.5 inches, depth 11.5 inches, height 26 inches.
