A Fine Small Charles I Oak Table Box
As is the norm of this type of table ā or deed box ā the top is boarded (in this instance a single piece of oak) with a double-reed edge moulding, and most unusually has the initials of the original owner āS Vā carved to the front just above the iron hasp and lockplate.
The front and side panels are deeply carved with an interlaced lunette device, terminating in a very simple fleur de lys. The lunettes are further enriched with stamp decoration, and the whole background is matted.
Exceptional colour and patina.
English, possibly Derbyshire, circa 1630-40.
Width 22.5 inches, depth 14 inches, height 9 inches.
