A High Back Yew Wood Windsor Armchair, impressed mark – Nicholson, Rockley (fl. 1831-41)

Another elegant high back Windsor armchair, with a well-grained elm seat.

Made by George Nicholson, who continued in Wheatland’s workshop after the bankruptcy. Making his chairs a in a very slightly different way – the tapering spindles being morticed into the seat rather than extending right through, yet retaining the elegant “single ring” turned leg, and the same style of arm support turning. Nicholson does simplify his top splat slightly, by eliminating the elongated diamond in the bottom.

In a very original condition, and excellent yew wood colour.

Rockley, Nottinghamshire, circa 1835.

Height 40.5 inches.

Ref 2132
