An Impressive Charles I Oak Chest

The three-panel lid, set within a moulded framework, opening to reveal a large internal “till” or “candle-box”, which has a simple carved front panel.

The deeply carved top rail of “S” scrolls, with central whorls, is set above three panels, the outer two carved with a quatrefoil design, flank the central panel, which has a stylised floral and leaf design. The two muntins also have a floral design, whilst the bottom rail and stiles are carved with an interlocking chain device, very typical of Wiltshire, around the Salisbury area. Between the bottom rail and stiles are two original punch decorated corner brackets.

Rich, dark colour, typical of the early 17^th century.
