An Interesting and Unusual Pair of Early 16th Century Carved Pilasters
Depicting two male figures, standing beneath a cartouche of scrolls, apparently supported by the raised arm of the figure. The faces are well executed, deeply carved, with exceptional detail – hair, beards, eyes, etc.
Across the chest is a stylised bandanna, whilst around the waist is a loin cloth held in place by a belt tied in the centre. The figures are further embellished by drooping tassels, flowerheads, pleats and whorls.
Wonderful rich, dark colour and surface.
English or Flemish, circa 1520-1560.
Note: This pair could have possibly been the supporters to either side of a coat of arms, overmantel or standing cupboard.
Height 29 inches, width 6 inches, depth 1.75 inches.
