A Magnificent Elizabeth I Carved Oak Figure

Amongst many rare and unusual features contained in this piece, possibly the most notable is the bird appearing at the top of the panel, standing on the figure’s head, his beak inside a bag of money, possibly stealing some of the contents. The bird is set amidst branches and leaves.

The figure is carved in great depth and detail. The head, with long thick curly hair, above a furrowed forehead. The eyes, nose and mouth set with a serious expression. The face is heavily moustached, and the figure wears an extremely long and full beard, which is carved in the finest detail.

The arms are crossed, beneath a pleated robe, with scalloped edge, and finishes with an ornate tassle above a plump fig.

The carving throughout is of the highest quality, deep, flowing and embellished with tiny punched decoration, which continues around the sides of the piece.

The colour and surface are absolutely superb.

English, circa 1560-80.

Height 37 inches, width 8 inches, depth 5 inches.

Ref 2934

Note: It would not be unreasonable to think that the figure could depict Judas. John 12:6 – He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. Matthew 26:34 - Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”

Here we have both the bag of money and a rooster.
