A Most Interesting Pair of Tudor Carved Oak Panels

Both of rectangular form, the first panel has a horizontal scrolling leafy stem, with a wonderful standing lion in the upper half. Below, and facing in the opposite direction, is a unicorn, again in a standing position. A couple of birds – perhaps storks (the stork, heron and crane are all symbols of love, hope long life or prosperity) – are carved amongst the foliage.

The second panel has portrait of a bearded gentleman within a circular foliate border. Above is a second portrait, this gentleman, looking quite aloof, sports a fantastic Tudor cap, with ornate feather decoration, looking longingly at a beaker, possibly pewter, and in his mind full of mead.

Below the two portraits is a tremendous depiction of a momento mori. A phrase and symbol, which when translated says “remember you must die”. This isn’t meant to be morbid or depressing, merely a reminder to make the most of each day.

A tremendous pair of early panels, probably from a screen rather than a piece of furniture – wrong size and subject for furniture.

Good colour and surface.

English, circa 1550-1600.

Height 32.5 inches, width 14 inches

Ref 2997
