An Important Elizabethan Oak Bed

The tester, with a large central panel, centred by a stylised daisy and surrounded with gadrooned mouldings. Ten smaller panels make up the rest of the tester, each one carved with a lozenge, with another central stylised daisy.

The headboard has two rows of dentil mouldings (which also appear around the large panel in the tester), between which are twin panels carved with pairs of serpents divided by small pelmet corbels. The two main panels of the headboard are recessed and have a rich central carnation within an applied arch, with floral guilloche carving. These panels are spaced by figural terms, two males and one female. Below a heavy waist moulding upon which the carved panels and terms sit are three plain panels.

The heavily turned end posts are constructed in five parts, joined by long turned pegs.

The piece is in a remarkably original condition, is of a good colour and surface. The bed has been in one house in Gloucestershire for the past two generations.

Gloucestershire, circa 1600.

A pocket sprung mattress and base has been made to suit the bed, fitting around the end posts.

Width 54 inches, depth 79 inches, height 72 inches.
