A Very Good Charles II Lancashire Side Chair

Probably the rarest type of side chair, containing a carved panel with stylised fork-tongued dragon, below a deep crest set between squared uprights terminating in characteristic pyramid finials. The cresting rail has the stylised central carnation, surrounded by scrolls and bunches of berries, which is peculiar to South Lancashire.

The boarded seat is secured to the run moulded rails by small oak dowels – an unusual construction for this type of chair, normally the seat would be nailed down with blacksmith-made nails. The turned bobbin legs are joined across the front by a bobbin and reel turned stretcher.

Fine original colour.

Lancashire, circa 1680.

Height 43.5 inches.
