A Rare James I Oak Wall Cupboard
Having a pair of cupboard doors, each with turned spindles which alternate between being ebonised and polished fruitwood.
Below, are panels filled with interlocking scrolls, a device which appears on the single lower door, door frames, and the outer uprights of the cupboard.
The sides are constructed from two panels, each with lozenge-carved centres. The extraordinarily flamboyant carving on all surfaces suggest this piece was made for a wealthy household keen to show off their social standing.
English, almost certainly southern, circa 1610.
Width 38 inches, height 35.5 inches, depth 9 inches.
