A Remarkable Charles I Oak Chest

The massive three-plank lid, held on iron strap hinges, above a richly carved five panel front. The top rail, carved with S-scrolls, above semi-circular arches, supported on short nulled columns. The centre of each arch with a stylised daisy head above initials ‘I G’ (probably J G) and ‘G G’, suggesting the piece was made to commemorate a marriage. The broad stiles, carved with fleshy fern-like leaves, whilst the bottom rail has a half round motif with stylised flower-heads. The carving is very typical of Gloucestershire, circa 1630.

The colour and patina are first class.
