A Fine Enclosed High Dresser

A traditional oak Welsh dresser, with fantastic detailing. The canopied rack is well shaped, with wide oak backboards. Under the overhanging cornice, there is a shaped and fretted frieze, with "droppers". The sides are shaped and "bellied" with a row of six spice drawers running along the bottom. The base has a twin borded top with six drawers below, all crossbanded in fruitwood and separated by strong waist mouldings. Flanking the drawers are two cupboard doors with well-shaped, fielded panels. The dresser, which has a wonderful soft, nutty brown patination, was unquestionably made by a very skilled joiner. A piece for a collector of Welsh furniture.

Mid-Wales, possibly Snowdonia, circa 1740.
