A Pair of Mid-Eighteenth Century Brass Candlesticks by George Grove (active 1748-1768)
A good bold pair of petal-based candlesticks, with brazed, or seamed, stems. The four slightly upturned petals in the base are part of the casting and presumably meant as decoration. A similar pair, with the same feature, are photographed in Eloy Koldeweij’s book, The English Candlestick, page 126, catalogue 103.
English, probably Birmingham, circa 1750.
Height 9 inches.
