An Exceptional James I Oak Bench
Originally made to accompany a long dining table, this bench has a single boarded top which is secured to the carved seat rails by five pairs of oak pegs. The rails themselves have ten stylised ferns set within semi-circular arches to each of the long sides, whilst there is a single fern and arch carved to each end (it is quite unusual to find all four sides carved – many benches only have one of the long sides decorated).
The boldly turned baluster legs joined by substantial end stretchers, which support the long centre stretcher.
English, Gloucestershire, circa 1620.
