A Fabulous James I Joint Stool
The triple-reeded boarded top, secured to the rails by six oak pegs. The rails themselves are carved with a “cable” type motif, often associated with the Salisbury area. The tall legs, beautifully turned, with a parallel baluster, the bottom of which finishes in a “reel”, slightly above the stretchers, which have a good run-moulded decoration – there is an excellent length of foot below the stretcher, giving height and tremendous presence to the stool.
Probably from the workshop of Humphrey Beckham, who worked in Salisbury at the beginning of the 17th century.
Outstanding colour and surface.
Width 18 inches, depth 10.5 inches, height 23 inches.
