A Wonderful James I Oak Table Desk
The boarded sloping lid, with the original iron strap hinges, retains a moulded and carved book rest, which is dowelled into the front board with short oak pegs – a most unusual construction.
The front panel, carved with a lovely geometric motif, which is continued round each side, retains the original lockplate and hasp. The interior has three “box drawers”, and most interestingly is lined with early 19th century newsprint, discussing the trial of Queen Caroline of Brunswick, brought up in the House of Lords in 1821.
Excellent proportions, colour and condition.
English, probably southern, Buckinghamshire, circa 1620.
Width 25 inches, back to front 15.5 inches, height 11 inches.
