Low Back Yew Wood Windsor Armchair Stamped Nicholson of Rockley

George Nicholson took over the Rockley workshop started by William Wheatland around 1830, and this example will have been one of his earliest chairs. The use of the flattened and curved underarm supports, together with the simple single turned leg, pre-dates the more complicated turned arm supports found on later chairs. It is very unusual to find any chair with the curved arm supports, bearing a maker's name, making this chair academically very important as it ties this design to a maker and area. It is the only stamped chair of this design I have owned.

George Nicholson, Rockley, fl 1831-1841
