A Fine and Rare Pair of Early Tudor Ceiling Bosses
Beautifully carved, with open tracery depicting scrolling vines, flower heads and stylised oak leaves.
The size and "footprint" of the two bosses are identical, although the centres follow a slightly different design. It is unlikely that there were only two such bosses on a ceiling - perhaps as many as a dozen, or even more on a large ceiling, which suggests that the carver initiated slight variations but on a common theme.
English, circa 1470.
7.5 inches square.
