An Exceptional Charles I Oak Settle
Of lovely small proportions, having a 5-panel back, the top rail carved with a trailing series of āSā scrolls above 2 horizontal panels of arabesque strapwork, and a centre horizontal rail with a continuous line of upright and inverted fleurs de lys.
The 3 square panels above the seat are carved with well-defined lozenges ā the flying pendants coming from each point of the lozenge are a detail of pieces made in the Yorkshire Dales.
The seat is constructed from 2 oak boards, which sit on deep rails with a run-moulded decoration. The legs have short, stout turnings which are a continuation of the arm supports; around the bottom is a robust stretcher which again is run moulded.
The colour is outstanding, rich and burnished ā possibly one of the finest pieces for colour I have had.
Yorkshire, circa 1630-40.
Across the arms 45 inches, height 46.5 inches, depth 18 inches.
