A Late 16th Century Tapestry Border Panel
Worked in silks and coloured wools, the border shows Prudence seated in the centre looking into a handheld mirror. To each side of her are seated monkeys, one holding a child’s hand. All the figures are surrounded by hanging fruit and foliage.
The top and bottom of the panel have a repeat patterned edging, whilst the ends are closed with a scrolling fleurs de lys cypher, which has been added in order to complete the panel.
A very interesting subject and retaining excellent colours, the panel measures 91 inches in length by 22 inches width.
Brussels, circa 1580.
