A Rare James I Oak Dowry Chest
Designed and constructed to be free-standing, this rare type of chest has a two-panelled front and back, each panel carved with a palmette design – a symmetrical group of spreading fronds, whilst the smaller end panels are carved with floral filled lozenges.
The top is formed from a pair of thick oak boards, with a simple ovolo moulded edge, and opens on iron pin hinges to reveal a deep vacant compartment.
Around the waist – on all four sides – is a good, strong moulding, beneath are the heavy baluster legs, which are joined by square run-moulded stretchers.
English, Gloucestershire/Wiltshire, circa 1620.
Width 36 inches, depth 22.5 inches, height 32 inches.
