An Outstanding Small Charles II Oak Chest of Drawers

Having a good twin-boarded top, with a deep under-moulding (the boards secured to the rails with lovely small oak pegs).

The impressive front contains three drawers, all side-hung and decorated with fantastic geometric mouldings (over 150 individual pieces). The drawers are separated with split-bobbin turnings. The brass drop handles appear to be the original (there are no marks where other drops have been).

The joiner’s expertise with the moulding planes is demonstrated again in the bottom, or skirt, moulding, which is exceptionally wide and complicated.

The stiles of the chest extend down, beneath the bottom moulding, and finish in a tenon onto which the flat bun feet are morticed. Correctly, the back stiles extend straight down, and have no bun foot.

Superb proportions, condition, colour and patina. Probably the best 17th century chest of drawers I have owned.

English, circa 1680-90.
