A Charming Late Tudor Period Oak Child's Chest

The boarded top (carved with the initials of the original owner) opens on pin hinges to reveal an interior with a candle box, or till, to the side. To the underside of the top are two shaped lopers, secured in place by iron nails.

The front board has chip-carved decoration to each end, with a vertical border of scratch carving, in a "zig-zag" pattern. The original iron lock plate, with its hinged hasp, is retained in the centre at the top. The front board is fastened to the boarded ends by two sets of four square oak pegs (the back board is secured in the same way).

The ends are truly lovely - with a forward-facing scrolled knee, the feet are then formed by a shaped gothic arch, with a little chip-carved decoration at the top.

A lovely small piece of child's furniture, in fine condition - hinges, hasp, lock and lockplate, colour and surface are all original.
