An Outstanding Elizabethan Oak Armchair with Carved Triple Panel Back

Having a tremendous top rail, deeply carved with stylised rose and honeysuckle (woodbine) flowerheads attached to a thick, fleshy intertwining stem. The rail has an undulating crest, again with leaf carving, and the whole sits between guilloche carved uprights terminating in boldly turned finials.

The horizontal upper panel is carved with a “run” of higher and lower arches, each filled with an upright stem, supporting leaves. The centre of the panel is inlaid with the owner’s initials “E E”, in holly.

The centre rail again has an intertwining stem, with rose and honeysuckle flowerheads, interspaced with small leaves to match the top rail.

The twin bottom panels are square, each with a lozenge flanked by whorls in each corner, and further embellished with stamped decoration. The bottom rail of the back, and seat rail, are again decorated with embellished carving.

The seat is formed from a single piece of oak, the legs, of inverted baluster form, are joined at the base by stretchers.

A wonderful and rare example of a late 16th century panel-back armchair.

Superb colour and patina.

English, circa 1600.

Height 45 inches, width 27 inches (across the seat), depth 21 inches.
