An Outstanding Charles II Oak Dresser Base
The boarded top, with multiple mouldings around the edge, set above three drawers, all decorated with intricate mitred mouldings, separated by short pierced corbels. The broad and deeply moulded waist moulding sits above a shaped frieze and four extremely well-turned baluster front legs with applied lozenges to the top and bottom.
Of an outstanding colour and rich patina, the originality of the piece deserves comment. From the little scratch-moulded lip along the back, to stop pewter plates slipping forward, the drawer pulls and escutcheons, down to the original flared skirt under the foot, this base has been looked after throughout its life and must have been made for a wealthy household at the end of the 17th century.
