A Rare Early 16th Century Nuremberg Brass Alms Dish
This is a more unusual variation of the Madonna and Child dish. Here, Mary does not hold a sceptre and supports Jesus on her left arm. Over Mary's head are two hovering angels holding a crown, she is standing on a moon, and in front of an aureola.
Around the scene is a running band of stylised flowers, the boodge is enriched with gadrooning, with stamp decoration to the rim, which has a rolled edge.
A most unusual dish, good condition and colour.
Nuremberg, circa 1520.
The scene taken from a woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer, circa 1513.
Diameter 14.75 inches (37 cm).
