A Rare Small Tudor Oak Chest
The four-panel lid with run-moulded decoration, retaining the iron “pin” hinges, above a panelled front, with excellent richly carved linenfold design. This is also repeated on the single panel to each end. The very wide central muntin retains a well-shaped iron lockplate.
The chest stands high on the stiles, which have moulded and chamfered decoration. The back and bottom board are from single oak boards, which are set into a chamfered frame. It would be fair to say this chest was made by a skilled joiner of the day, having excellent woodworking details and fine proportions, and almost certainly for a wealthy household.
English, probably London or South of England, circa 1560.
Length 47 inches, depth 18.5 inches, height 25 inches.
