Smoker's Windsor

Known at the time of their manufacture as a "Smoking High Windsor Chair", but now more commonly called a "Broad Arm Windsor Chair", this example is made in very well figured yew, with a burr yew centre splat. The shaped saddle seat is made in burr elm, an unusual feature, but a sign of the quality of the maker. Broad Arm Chairs are never stamped by the maker, but instead have a paper label glued or nailed to the underside of the seat. From the style of arm and leg turnings it is highly likely that this chair was made in the workshop of Isaac Allsop of Worksop, who was making chairs between 1871 and 1887.
