A Superb Early Charles II Oak Box Seat Settle
The top rail, surmounted by five turned knobs, or finials, is beautifully and delicately carved with nine pairs of flowers, the stems of which create a border giving the impression of independent panels.
Below the top rail are four horizontal panels, the outer two with further carved leaf and flower designs, whilst the centre two have a small bearded face, with foliage extending along the arms – perhaps a symbol of the “green man”. The centre rail of the piece has a continuing and undulating carved design – the top section is finished with a pair of tight scrolled “ears”.
Above the boarded lifting seat – which retains the original iron butterfly hinges – are five plain panels, set into a run moulded frame. Below the seat are four rectangular panels, again in a run-moulded frame.
The settle has bold, down-carved arms, resting on well-turned supports, which continue down to form the legs.
Tremendous presence, colour and surface – one of the best.
Yorkshire, circa 1660
