A beautifully proportioned child’s high chair, the shaped cupid’s bow top rail above a well-shaped chamfered back splat, above a boarded seat. The scrolled arms, with acanthus leaf carving, supported on elegantly turned baluster legs, which in turn are joined by similarly turned stretchers. The back legs have a tremendous rake at the bottom, to prevent the chair toppling backwards when in use. Outstanding colour and surface.English, circa 1690-1700.Height 44 inches, width 16 inches.Ref 2085The candlestand dates from early in the George II period, and is of a most unusual form. The single piece top sits above a slightly smaller “undershelf”, which again is made from a single piece of oak, which is slotted over the turned stem prior to the top being fitted.
