A Wonderful Medieval Carved Oak and Polychrome Group
In the centre, Christ is being stripped by his executioners, shown on his right hand side, whilst to his left are two gentle-looking figures, possibly Mary and St John.
The carver has displayed in great detail the expressions of all six characters. The group is carved in oak, with a hollow back, and retains much of the original polychrome decoration.
Northern France, circa 1450-1500.
Recent provenance – a private collection of early sculptures and objects in North Yorkshire.
Height 33 inches, width 14 inches.
